Reader Poll: Individuals Or Parties?

I've had an annoying discussion with an arrogant Democrat over at Eschaton recently about the role of parties in democracy. So I turn to my readers to help me understand democracy, and I ask for answers to these questions:

Which is more important to democracy: the individual, or the party?

My view: the individual.

Are parties pre-requisite for democracy to function?

My view: no.

Should primaries be open, as they are in Vermont, or should people who are not registered in a party MYOB* (as I was told)?

My view: I think closed primaries are anti-democratic. To me they smack of the same elitist mechanisms as how we used to choose Presidents before democratic trends in the States allowed the people to vote for electors. Yeah, you have the right of assembly, but if you want me to support your candidate you really ought go out of your way to engage me in the selection process, not lock me out.

* Well, I guess MTOB. Whatever.
