I honestly hoped we'd "turned a corner" in Iraq, as US officials like to tell us. Playing the DoD game for a moment, I was happy we'd gone days without any combat deaths. Last night more troops were killed in a firefight, and dozens of Iraqis were killed or wounded in a bombing:

A car bomb has exploded outside the Jordanian Embassy in Baghdad on Thursday, killing up to 10 people, including five Iraqi guards.

As many as 40 people were wounded in the blast, according to Lt. Col. Eric Nantz, a U.S. military spokesman.
At least four Iraqi civilians were also killed...

In a separate incident, two U.S. soldiers were killed in a firefight late Wednesday in Baghdad's al Rasheed neighborhood, according to U.S. Central Command.
An interpreter was also wounded in the incident and received treatment at the medical facility.

And of course, we've had non-combat military and civilian deaths this week, so this is really just a continuation of what was happening under the radar. But I did take the lack of combat deaths to be a positive sign. According to WaPo, this is "the worst incident since war's end." Um, I think the war is not over.

And yeah, I guess even if things are trending toward more security, we should still expect casualties, but the firefight and the bombing show me that this situation could become even worse.
